Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact emergency services?

In any emergency where life, property, or safety is at risk, call 911. That number connects you to dispatch for police, fire, or EMS responses.

For non-emergency matters, use the local non-emergency Sheriff’s Office number published on the county website.

Can I submit a tip anonymously?

Yes. Many jurisdictions allow anonymous tips. Contact the Sheriff’s Office or use a local tip line (if available) to share information confidentially.

Do not use 911 for anonymous tips — that line is for active emergencies.

Who responds to fire and medical emergencies in Choctaw County?

Fire protection and emergency medical services are provided through a mix of municipal departments and volunteer fire departments in the county. EMS/ambulance services respond to medical emergencies and transport when needed.

For fire safety questions or non-emergency fire services, contact your local fire department or emergency management office.

What does Emergency Management do?

Choctaw County Emergency Management coordinates planning and response for natural disasters, severe weather (like tornadoes), floods, hazardous conditions, and community emergencies. They help issue alerts, coordinate shelters, and work with state and federal partners.

What should I do if I see a stray or dangerous animal?

For stray or potentially dangerous animals, contact your local animal control service or the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line. Do not approach aggressive animals; wait for trained personnel.

Is there a cost for records or reports (police, fire, EMS)?

Yes. Public records requests for incident reports, crash reports, or other official documents may carry a copy fee set by state or county policy. Contact the office directly for fee schedules and how to submit a request.

What services does the Sheriff’s Office provide?

The Sheriff’s Office handles:

• Law enforcement across the unincorporated county
• Traffic enforcement and accident responses
• Criminal investigations
• Jail operations (if applicable)
• Civil processes (serving papers, writs, evictions)

If you have a law enforcement question, report a non-emergency, or want to file a report, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly.

When should I call 911 vs. non-emergency numbers?

Call 911 when:
• Someone’s life, health, or safety is in danger
• A crime is in progress
• There’s a serious fire
• There’s a medical emergency

Use non-emergency public safety numbers for:
• Reporting past property crimes (no suspect present)
• Information or questions about records
• Noise complaints or other civil issues that don’t threaten safety

How do I receive emergency alerts?

Residents are encouraged to sign up for local emergency alert systems (county alerts, weather radios, and state notifications). During severe weather or emergencies, official alerts may also be broadcast via radio, TV, or county notification systems.

How do I report traffic hazards (debris, downed signs, dangerous roads)?

To report traffic hazards, contact the County Sheriff’s Office for safety issues, or County Public Works/Road Department for road maintenance concerns. 911 should be used for immediate dangers to life or property.

How can I request public safety records?

Public safety records requests are typically submitted in writing to the agency that created the report (Sheriff’s Office records unit, fire department, EMS records). Include as much identifying info as possible (date, names, case or incident number) so staff can locate the record.

How do I request a police report or accident report?

Police reports, incident reports, and crash reports are typically obtained by contacting the Sheriff’s Office Records Unit or visiting the office in person. There may be a small fee for copies.

Be ready with as much detail as possible: case number, date, location, names involved.

What information should I give to 911 dispatchers?

When calling 911, be ready to provide:
• The location of the emergency
• Your name and phone number
• A brief description of the problem
• Details about injuries, suspects, or hazards

The dispatcher may ask follow-up questions to ensure help arrives safely.

How can I request a burn permit or get fire safety information?

Burning regulations vary by jurisdiction. Some areas require a burn permit from the local fire department or emergency management before conducting controlled burns. Contact your local fire department or Emergency Management Office for requirements and current conditions.

Who handles animal control issues?

Animal control duties (stray animals, dangerous animals, pet licensing) are handled by local animal control agencies or contracts through municipal services. Contact the Sheriff’s Office or local city hall for guidance on animal control in your area.

Where do I apply for a special event/public safety permit?

Public safety permit requirements for parades, road closures, or large events are usually handled by the Sheriff’s Office in coordination with county officials. Contact the Sheriff’s Office or County Clerk for permit instructions.
